Here is a little story:
“People change!” I have heard this phrase quite a few times in my life, not realizing that it comes from personal experiences that people who shared it had, had. I have experienced the biggest changes in my life, and was happy about it. Some of those changes came because of other people’s influences on me.
I lived my childhood years in a little town Chernivtsi, Ukraine. It is somewhat of an understatement to say my family wasn’t big enough because I grew up in an orphanage since I was a little baby. My mom left me because of her addiction to alcohol. I felt like a single flower standing in a desert field ready to be blown away. I felt alone, but always held on to the dream, maybe one day I would have a family.
When I was eleven I received a family. One kind woman, with a very strong personality fostered five children from the orphanage, including me. I cannot say that flowers were always in bloom, but I really appreciated and even now, am grateful for her strong as rock patience with us. I understand how hard it was for her to raise us. There were always many challenges. One of the challenges was never enough money. Regardless of these many challenges, we were happy to be together.
We continued our education. I did my very best with homework so my fostered mom (Aunt Valya) would let me play with the children or would let me watch TV. She recognized my understanding of my school subjects was increasing. My grades were improving rapidly. I was the little genius in my family, so she stopped checking on my homework. She just asked, “Have you finished your homework?” I would reply “Yes”, though there were times I wasn’t telling the whole truth. As time moved forward I started thinking about my future career. I chose to study Culinary Arts. I wanted to become a great cook and a pastry chef. I received my degree with an award in culinary arts. I am now a qualified cook with one and a half years of experience in restaurants, bars, and cafes.
During my high school education I would pass the University in Chernivtsi and would ask aunt Valya what building this was. She would say, “Only rich people study there!” “There are students hoping to be executives and business owners after graduating in their field of study,” my aunt would continue her conversation. When she told me about this University I had a great determination in my heart to study there! Though my aunt and her elder son would argue with me about my dreams of being a student at the University, I realized I had no finances to accomplish my dreams.
After three years of education at a vocational school, I was accepted to the University of Chernivtsi. For my education I had government support. I studied very hard and was diligent in my studies.
Finally, I moved to the states to pursue better education in Computer
Science. I didn’t know many people from Ukraine that studied in the US. But I
did know it would be very difficult. I never realized the problems with applying
and finally receiving my visa from the Ukrainian government. What a nightmare!
But I never gave up! I was hungry as a wolf, and also sly as a snake, with my
dream of better education. It is not always very easy to leave your comfort
zone. I have come to know that I was finally tested on my desires for the
American education, I so dreamed of. My Ukrainian visa came through. After
finally realizing what a great opportunity was ahead in my life, I had to get
all of my ducks flying in the same direction. Finally, in August 2005 I came to the United States with only $1 in my pocket. But this is another story.
I must tell you, dreams do come true if one is willing to work and sacrifice for them. We need to really pay attention to what people say about us, who knows, it might change your life!
A full story about my life can be read in the upcoming book I am writing. I will keep you posted.
